Worm Bins

Worms are efficient compositors that also produce nutrient rich "worm tea" fertilizer. Surplus worms can be sold or fed to fish, ducks, and chickens. Worm farming has a productive niche on the sustainable farm. The worm bin has to protect the worms from predators, like raccoons, and from temperature extremes. This bin will be below ground, dig into a slope under the south side of a large tree. The cinder blocks act as a retaining wall and the surrounding soil moderates the temperature. The front doors are treated 2x4s skinned in cement backer board, and are insulated. The top doors have glazing on the south side to allow winter sun to shine in. On sub-freezing winter nights, the bin would be covered. The tree shades the bin in summer but allow for full sun in the winter. The floor slopes to the front drain to collect the worm tea.

The bin is divided by a wire mesh. To harvest the compost, all the food is raked to one side. In a few days most of the worms will migrate to that side. The front door on the other side is then opened and the compost shoveled out. The bin is about 4 x 8 feet.
